How Trey Hinson’s latest venture is an extension of his need to help people succeed
Meet Trey Hinson
TRICARE For Life (TFL) is a Medicare-wraparound coverage that many military veterans use if they have Medicare coverage A, which covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care and some home health care, and Medicare B, which covers certain doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies and preventive services. TFL does not extend to family members.
It was here, working with military retirees over 65, that Trey Hinson started his professional career.
After graduating from the University of South Carolina at 21, he went to work for Blue Cross Blue Shield in an entry level leadership position known as a Pod Manager. Ask Hinson and he will admit that he and his colleagues were glorified “get it done” people. Learning how to process claims, customer service, etc., Hinson quickly acclimated himself to the job.
Sitting down with retirees already dealing with extremely emotional situations, Hinson quickly discovered he didn’t know what he didn’t know.
“When the phone rings, they call because of a need. They are not calling because everything is beautiful.”
The other arc of his responsibilities involved a little more learning—a skill set that is not always readily available to college graduates. As part of his leadership training, along with learning the medical terminology and intricacies of the healthcare system, Hinson and his colleagues had to learn how to de-escalate situations for people who had seen more than any of them had ever dreamed of being involved with.
“I was 21. I’d lost some friends over the years, but the gravitas of that type of situation with military people who had experienced the things they had experienced, talking about hitting you square in the nose.
They taught us how to de-escalate situations, some even dire, and when to call in someone else to help. You have to learn how to push yourself so that the person across the table or on the other end of the phone knows you care.”
The emotionally charged atmosphere and makeup of the audience Hinson was dealing with has a way of teaching like no other experience.
Working with very regimented thinking, structured individuals who follow the chain of command approach to the letter helped shape his thinking. It also helped that he had mentors who saw potential in the way he handled people, and complex and difficult situations.

The dynamics that helped construct the professional life of Trey Hinson came early. Pushing through with what he calls a lot of intestinal fortitude, Hinson had to deal with some personal issues during college, eventually leaning on the discipline he grew up with to become one of those “get it done” people his future employees saw in him.
He worked construction throughout college, hanging sheetrock and installation for a large Columbia, South Carolina company. “I have always been the person who gets his hands into the things that most people don’t enjoy doing. It's taught me so much in life to be able to do that—how to keep pushing forward.”

His work at Blue Cross Blue Shield did not go unnoticed. After spending 12 years working his way up the ladder, Hinson caught the attention of a company called Ocozzio, a small marketing firm that focused on healthcare benefits, technology and cost containment.
After working as VP of Marketing and learning under the tutelage of Ocozzio’s CEO, Hinson eventually was named COO, an experience that would lay the foundation for his newest venture, Goliath Sales Strategies.
Goliath, which focuses on sales strategy, partnership development and sales enablement services, is the vehicle by which Hinson will continue to build trusted relationships and long-lasting partnerships in the healthcare sector.
